nip uk, day 2: concerts @ arnolfini
After a head-on day with Zach and Openframeworks, we kicked off with the ‘live’ side of the UK series. Andre S, Torsten, Toktek (aka Tom V) and Zack all played at the Dark Studio, Anrnolfini. We packed the wee room. Andre kicked us off with a version of his installation Ankh, which pics up via a mic positioned in the centre of the room, the audience movements and sounds. This was visualised on a large projection screen. Unfortuantely given our audience were not primed for this and very respectful, they decided to sit rather than move the full effect of Andre’s piece was not realised, this time!
Following Andre S, Toktek (aka Tom V) lead a rippin’ session, with Andre G, deciding at the last minute to hook up with him, and provide the visuals. This collaboration worked brilliantly. Tom creates a mix of delicate, yet rampin’ electro sounds, tweaks and hums, which layer and wrap around each other. When they breakdown down they almost leave traces and silences hanging in the air, as new sounds emerge through. These electro songs are introduced with gentleman grace by Tom (who kinda makes you think of a Dutch, Aphex Twin) as he triggers the compositions live via a series of joysticks and controllers (using LiSA and JuXion). This was married with Andre G’s miminalistic and responsive, coloured and black+white, visual line-aesthistic (created using MaxMSP). Together the mix of layered sounds, Tom’s expressive physicality and Andre’s stripped back visuals - ensured the whole piece worked and from the audience hoots and claps at the end, it was clear they thought so too.
Torsten invited local musicans and artists, Danny Landau (playing clarinet) and Vic Love (playing the big horn/sousaphone) to join his ‘Machine Orchestra’. The ‘Machine Orchestra’ is a new project for Torsten, which was tired out at NIP and is part of a larger piece of work, which will be shown at Locws, 2007, Swansea. The orchestra is composed of various everyday objects (tumble dryer, lawn mower, saws, drills, hoover etc), which are hacked and collectively patched together in MaxMSP. Torsten triggers the orchestra, ‘conducting’ from the side, as he mixes and fades in the different machines, while Danny and Vic, responsed to the sounds triggered. Between the glitches and fallouts of the each machine, you could almost during this short improv, ’see’ the machines coming to life, their animated presense increasing as the composition unfolded.
Ending the night, Zack wowed the audience as they clapped in delight, when he played versions of the ‘Manuel Input Session’ and ‘Drawn’. For those participating in the NIP workshop, both pieces demostrating the thinking behind Openframeworks, while for those new to Zack’s work, showed what is magically possibile. The ‘Manuel Input’ version was played using a overhead projector and digital computer projector, which are aligned so that the projections overlap. This gives a mixed light, which during the performance, assists the computer vision system to analyse the sihouettes of his hands or the impressions of various shapes (numbers, circles etc), which Zack places on top of the overhead projector. In repsonse to this, graphics and sounds are generated in real-time. Zack for the most played solo this piece solo but was joined by Kathy for a ‘paper, sissors, stone’ version of ‘Manuel Input’.
Zack followed this by a solo verion of ‘Drawn’. In comparsion to the ‘Manuel Input Session’, where the visual style of the graphics is chunky, bold pinks, red and blue. ‘Drawn’s black and white, ink images are almost Japanneese like, miministic impressions, which take life as Zack draws, captures and augments the ink drawings, rotating, flipping and moving them across the page. Similar techniques are used across both projects with very different visual outcomes. In both the ‘awe’ of each experiment is made all the more real by the way in which Zack peforms each piece, like a modern magician.
Zack ended the night, with the audience trying out ‘Drawn’ for themselves - this drew a good crowd who we’re delighted to see what lay behind it all. Thanks to everyone who attended - the first gig had a great atmophere and perfect way to kick off the NIP performance series.
